Explain why respiration is said to be the reverse of photosynthesis.

Respiration and photosynthesis are almost opposite processes because photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen as the by-product while cellular respiration uses oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide as waste product. Since the product of one process is the raw material of other and vice versa, hence the two processes are said to be mutually opposite.
