Question

Explain, why silver nitrate crystals are dissolved in distilled water and not in tap water to prepare silver nitrate solution as a laboratory reagent.
Give one chemical test to distinguish between dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulphuric acid.

Solution

Silver nitrate solution is prepared by dissolving silver nitrate crystals in distilled water rather than in tap water. The reason being, tap water may consist of certain impurities like chloride ions, which give a white precipitate of silver chloride.

Adding silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution to an unknown acid results in the formation of a white precipitate, confirming the acid to be HCl. The silver nitrate solution gives no such precipitate with dilute sulphuric acid.

H2SO4 + AgNO3 → No reaction

HCl(aq) + AgNO3(aq) → AgCl(s) + HNO3(aq)
