Sodium extract (Lassaigne's extract) is boiled with dilute $H N O_{3}$ before testing for halogens to decompose $N a C N$ or $N a_{2} S$ present in the Lassaigne's extract otherwise these will produce white ppt. with $A g N O_{3}$ and would thus interfere with the test of halogens.
