Question

Explain why solid Sodium chloride does not pass electricity through it?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Solid Sodium chloride(NaCl) they are not a good conductor of electricity since it does not contains any free electrons.
  2. The presence of free electrons makes material conduct.
  3. Due to the strong electrostatic force of attraction present in solid Sodium chloride, ions cannot be dissociated and becomes non-conductive.
  4. But Sodium chloride in the fused or liquid state conducts electricity in which ions are dissociated from them.
  5. Solid Sodium chloride cannot form ions due to the presence of a strong electrostatic force of attraction.
