Question

Explain why the water pipes are covered with cotton during very cold weather?

Open in App
Solution

The water pipes are covered with cotton during extremely cold weather because air is trapped in the fine pores of the cotton. Air is an insulator of heat and thus prevents the heat transfer between the water pipe and cold surroundings. As a result, cotton prevents the water in the pipes from freezing.
