Dear Student,
Atmosphere is the combination of natural gases such as Nitrogen, Oxygen etc.
This layers extent upto 1000km from the surface of the earth. Having total mass of 100 billion trillion tonns.
The weight of mass of atmosphere of the earth exerts pressure on earth and everything on earth. This pressure is called atmospheric pressure.
This pressure acts equally in all direction and decrease with the height above the sea level.
You can use following experiment to demonstrate the existents of atmospheric pressure.
:Fill a glass onethird with water. Cover the mouth with an index card and invert (holding the card in place) over a sink. Remove your hand from the card. The card stays in place because air surrounding the card is heavier than water inside the glass. and the card experiences about 15 kf force pushing upward by the air and only about one kg force pushing downward from the water - hence the card stays in place.
Regards.
