Question

Explain with examples that rate of diffusion decreases with increase in density of solutes.

Open in App
Solution

The increase in density will decrease the rate of diffusion. There is an inverse relation between density and rate of diffusion. Diffusion involves movement of molecules from one place to another.

Main Factors affecting diffusion

Diffusion is directly proportional to temperature

inversely proportional to density of the substance.

example
  • Take two beakers filled with water.
  • Put a drop of blue ink slowly along the sides of the first beaker and honey in the same way in another beaker.
  • Leave it undisturbed.
  • We observe that honey diffuses slowly as compared to ink.
  • Honey is denser than blue ink
  • This experiment shows that lesser the density, faster the rate of diffusion
