Sexual reproduction is characterized by two unique events i.e., meiosis to produce haploid gametes and fertilization to produce a diploid zygote. In aquatic animals and plants, the fertilization is usually external. The female gamete may be retained within the body or released in water. A large number of male gametes are shed in water which reaches female gamete through the agency of water. In terrestrial animal and plants, the female gamete is retained in the body of the female animal and hence, fertilization is internal. In amphibian animals also the fertilization is external. In amphibian plants, the fertilization depends on water to carry sperms to female gametes.
