Question

F- has higher hydration enthalpy and larger electronegativity, but still HI is more acidic than HF, why so?

Solution

Dear Student,

HI is more stronger acid than HF due to higher stability of I- in comparison to F-. Although F is more electronegative than I, yet due to the bigger size of I, the negative charged is dispersed more properly and so I- is more stable.
Hence, HI is more stronger acid than HF.
