Use Distributive property : A(B+C)=AB+AC
$4 (2 - x) = 9 \Rightarrow 4 \times 2 - x \times (4) = 9 \Rightarrow 8 - 4 x = 9 \Rightarrow - 4 x = 9 - 8 \Rightarrow - 4 x = 1 \Rightarrow x = \frac{- 1}{4}$
