Solution

(i) (p2 – 2pq + q2) – r2

= (p – q)2 – (r)2 [∵ p2 – 2pq + q2 = (p – q)2]
(0.5 marks)

= (p – q + r) (p – q – r)
(0.5 marks)

(ii) (x + y)2 – (x – y)2

It is in the form of a2 – b2

a = x + y, b = x – y

∴ a2 – b2 =(a + b)(a – b)
(0.5 marks)

= (x + y + x – y) [x + y – (x – y)]
(0.5 marks)

= 2x [x + y – x + y]
(0.5 marks)

= (2x) (2y) = 4xy
(0.5 marks)
