Given expression: $(a - b)^{2} - 2 (a - b)$

The common factor is $(a - b)$ .

Dividing by $(a - b)$ in the above expression , we get

${\frac{(a - b)^{2}}{a - b}} - {\frac{2 (a - b)}{a - b}}$

$= a - b - 2$

$∴ (a - b)^{2} - 2 (a - b) = (a - b) (a - b - 2)$
