Question

Factorize:6 X2 + 5 x - 6

Open in App
Solution

6 x^2 + 5 x – 6

step 1: Multiply 1st term and last term, we get

6 x^2 × – 6 = – 36x^2

Step 2: Now split the middle term into two terms such that either adding or subtracting we get back

the same term and by multiplying them we get the product of 1st and last terms

That is 5x can be split into terms as 9x and – 4x because, 9x × – 4x gives – 36x^2 and

9x – 4x gives the same term 5x.

6x^2 + 5x – 6 = 6x^2 + 9x – 4x – 6

Step 3: Now take the common factors in the first two terms and last two terms as shown

6x^2 + 5x – 6 = 6x^2 + 9x – 4x – 6

= 3x(2x + 3) – 2(2x + 3)

= (2x + 3)(3x – 2)
