We have:
$x^{2} + 5 x - 6$
We have to split 5 into two numbers such that their sum is 5 and their product is ( $-$ 6).
Clearly, $6 + (- 1) = 5 and 6 \times (- 1) = - 6$ .

$∴ x^{2} + 5 x - 6 = x^{2} + 6 x - x - 6 = x (x + 6) - 1 (x + 6) = (x + 6) (x - 1)$
