Also known as “father of Indian palaeontology”, he studied anatomy and morphology of Palaeozoic ferns and also worked on fossil plants of the Indian Gondwana formations. He founded the first palaeobotanical institute of world in Lucknow which was later named as Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany.
