Let the present age of father and son is x and y

Then as per question $x+y=48$ ........................(1)

Given $x=5y$ .......................................................(2)

substituting equation 2 in equation 1 we get

$5y+y=48$

$6y=48$

$y=8$.........................................................................(3)

Putting value of y in eqn 2 we get $x=5\left(8\right)=40$

We get $x=40$

Then age of father is $40$ years
