Fats get broken down into glycerol and fatty acids. Glycerol is initially oxidised to dihydroxyacetone phosphate and is then converted to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate with the help of isomerase enzyme. Thus fatty acids enter the glycolysis as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate.

The resulting product of glycolysis is pyruvic acid or pyruvate which is further oxidized to acetyl CoA. Acetyl CoA enters the Krebs cycle. Acetyl Co-A is the common molecule in the respiratory pathway for all the respiratory substrates.
