Female gametophyte is formed from the megaspore mother cell through the processes megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis. The diploid megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to form four haploid megaspores and this is called megasporogenesis. Out of four haploid megaspores, only one remains functional and the rest three degenerate. The functional megaspore then develops into female gametophyte or embryo sac by the process of megagametogenesis. The nucleus of functional megaspore divides three times by mitosis to form 8 nuclei. These 8 nuclei then get organised in the following manner:
1. 3 nuclei get organized at the micropylar end to form egg apparatus consisting of one egg cell and two synergids.
2. 2 nuclei get organized in the center to form a diploid secondary nucleus.
3. Rest 3 nuclei get organized to form antipodal cells at the chalazal end.
Hence there are seven cells: 1 egg cell, 2 synergids, 1 secondary nucleus (diploid) and 3 antipodal cells.
So, a mature female gametophyte is 7 celled and 8 nucleate. So, the correct answer is '7 celled and 8 nucleate',
