Ferric atom has Fe3+ ion which on reaction with NH4SCN gives red color due to formation of the Fe(SCN)3 . When in contact with Fe3+ ion solution in ferric alum solution the product of the reaction is a solution with a blood red colour, due to the formation of the thiocyanato iron complex Fe(SCN)3.
