Question

Fifty lamps each of resistance 100ohm are connected in parallel across a 220Vmain.

Find (a) the power consumed in watts, and (b) the cost of operating the lamps for 20 hours at 10 paise per KWh.

Solution

Step 1:Given

A 220voltsmain is used to connect 50 bulbs in parallel, each with a resistance of 100ohm.

Step 2:Finding equivalent resistance

The equivalent resistance is:-

1R=1R1+1R2+......+1R50

1R=1100+1100+...+11001R=50100R=2ohm

Step 3: Calculating power consumed

P=V2/RP=(220)2/2P=24200W

Step 4:Cost of operating the lamps for 20 hours at 10 paise per kWh

P=24.2kWTime=20Cost(rs)=10100=0.1rs

Cost= Power ×time ×cost (in rs)

=24.2×20×0.1

=48.40Rs

Hence, the power consumed is 24.2kW and the cost is 48.40Rs.
