Question

Figure (16-E111)shows a person standing somehere in between two identical tuning forks, each vibrating at

512 Hz. If both the tuning forks move towards right at a speed of 5.5 m s^{-1}, find the number of beats heard by the listener. Speed of sound in air =330ms1.

Solution

According to the data,

Vs=5.5 m/s for each tuning fork So, the apparent frequency heard from the tuning fork on the left,

f1=(3303305.5)×512

=520.68 Hz

Similarly, apparent frequency from the tuning fork on the right

f11=(3303305.5)×512

=503.60 Hz

So, beats produced

=520.68-503.60=17.5 Hz
