Figure 3.24 gives the x-t plot of a particle in one-dimensional motion. Three different equal intervals of time are shown. In which interval is the average speed greatest, and in which is it the least ? Give the sign of average velocity for each interval.

The average speed is the ratio of the total distance travelled to the total time taken during the motion. It is the slope of x-t plot shown in the figure.

From the graph, it is seen that the slope in interval 3 is steeper than that of intervals 1 and 2. Also, the slope of interval 1 is steeper than that of interval 2. Hence, the average speed is the leastin interval 2 and it is greatest in interval 3.

The slope of the graph is positivein interval 1 and 2 so, the signs of average velocity are positive.The slopeof the graph is negativein interval 3therefore,the sign of averagevelocityis negative.
