Figure represents a transformer.
(i) Name the process by which a changing current in the primary coil P causes a changing current in the secondary coil S.
(ii) Suggest a material used for the coils. Explain why this material is used.

Solution

i) A Transformer is used to convert low voltage (or high current) to high voltage (or low current) and vice versa.
It is based on the principal of electromagnetic induction.
So using electromagnetic induction we can changre current in the secondary coil S by changing current in the primary coil.

ii) Material used is generally conducting metal.
Most transformer coils are made from copper wire .It is good conductor that's why this material is used.
