Figure shows a closed surface which intersects a conducting sphere. If a positive charge is placed at point P, find the sign of flux passing through the curved surface S.

Solution

By induction the charge induced on the left side of sphere is positive as shown in figure. Thus, the charge enclosed by closed surface S is positive. By Gauss's law the flux is proportional to enclosed charge. Hence the sign of the flux will be positive.
