Question

Figure shows a container filled with a liquid of density ρ. Four points A,B,C and D lie on the diametrically opposite points of a circle as shown. Points A and C lie on a vertical line and points B and D lie on a horizontal line. PA,PB,PC,PD are the absolute pressures at the respective points. Then, the correct statement(s) is/are :

Solution

The correct option is D PD=PB=PC+PA2
As we know,
Points at the same height in the same liquid have the same pressure.
Thus, PB=PD
Points with height difference, say h, will have a difference of pressure of ρgh.

From figure,
PA=P0+ρgh ...(i)
PB=PD=P0+ρg (h+r) ...(ii)
PC=P0+ρg (h+2r) ...(iii)
where r is the radius of the circle.

By eqn (i)+(ii)
PC+PA=[P0+ρg (h+2r)]+[P0+ρgh]
PC+PA=P0+ρgh+ρg(2r)+P0+ρgh
PC+PA=2[P0+ρg (h+r)]
PC+PA2=P0+ρg (h+r)
i.e PC+PA2=PB=PD
i.e., option (1), (2) and (4) gives correct statement, but statement (3) is incorrect.
