Question

Figure shows two coherent line sources of sound, S1 and S2 separated by a distance 12 m. The sources emit same power and their wavelengths are also same. A detector moves along a circular path with centre at S2 and radius 4 m. The wavelength of the sound is 1 m. When it is at A the intensity of sound is Io=25 W/m2. The intensity of sound (in W/m2) at B due to S1 only is (Take S1A=9 m)

Solution

The correct option is C 910
Given λ=1 m
and IA=25 W/m2

Intensity of line source I1r
so IAS1=k9; IAS2=k4
where k is any constant.
Now path difference at A is 5 m which is integral multiple of λ(1 m).
So, intensity at A is maxima and is
(I1+I2)2
2S=(k9+k4)2
k=36

IS1 or S2(r)=36r

Now IBS1=36S1B
=3642+122=910 W/m2
