trachea is a kind of flexible tube like structure also known as wind pipe.
Struc: it is about 12 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. It lies in front of the oesophagus and extends
downwards to neck. It extends from the larynx to the middle of thoracic cavity where it
divides into the bronchi. The wall of trachea is made up of fibrous muscular tissue
supported by C – shaped cartilage rings, which are 16-20 in number. They reinforce and
provide rigidity to the tracheal wall to ensure that the trachea remains open all the
time.
Func: as trachea is internally lined with ciliated epithelium and mucous glands, so if any
foreign particle or dust particle enters, it gets trapped by the mucus and immediately
expelled out either by coughing action or may get swept towards the larynx and enter
in oesophagus where it gets expelled during defecation.
