(a) The y-coordinate of a point on the x-axis is ____________.

(b) The x-axis coordinate is called as ____________.

(c) The x-axis and y-axis intersect at ____________.

(d) If a point (x, y) (0, 0) is in the third quadrant, then x + y has _____________ sign.

(e) If a point (x, y) lies above horizontal axis, then y is always _____________.

(f) The point of intersection of x = y and x = − y is ____________.

(g) The line y = 4x + 5 intersects y-axis at the point ____________.

Solution

(a) The coordinates of a point lying on the x-axis are of the form (a, 0).

The y-coordinate of a point on the x-axis is zero.

(b) The x-coordinate is called abscissa.

(c)The x and y-axes intersect at the origin.

The x-axis and y-axis intersect at (0, 0).

(d) The signs of the coordinates of a point lying in the third quadrant are (−,−). The sum of the x and y-coordinates is also negative.

If a point is in the third quadrant, then x + y is always negative.

(e) Above the horizontal axis, y is always positive.

If a point (x, y) lies above horizontal axis, then y is always positive.

(f) On solving the equations x = y and x = −y, we get x = 0 and y = 0.

The point of intersection of x = y and x = −y is (0, 0).

(g) For the y-axis, the value of x is always 0.

The line y = 4x + 5 intersects the y-axis at the point (0, 5).
