Solution

Litmus is a water-soluble mixture of dye majorly extracted from the lichens. The litmus paper is usually absorbed into a filter paper to produce a pH indicator.

Litmus solution is used for the detection of acids and bases because it shows a visible change in colour when mixed with any acidic or basic solution. The change in colour of litmus paper is dependent on the pH.

  1. Under acidic conditions, the blue litmus solution appears red.
  2. Under basic conditions, the red litmus solution appears blue.

Thus, the blue colour of the litmus solution changes to red by acid.
