Fill in the blanks.
(i) Combined pill, (ii) minipill, (iii) injectable, (iv) silicon rubber rod
In combined pills, the progesterone component suppresses LH secretion and the oestrogen suppresses FSH secretion. Without adequate levels of these LH and FSH hormones, ovulation does not take place. Progesterone only pill or minipill contains only progesterone. This pill causes erratic cycles and has less efficacy compared to the combined pills. Injectables are variations of progesterone or progesterone and oestrogen combinations, which are administered as intramuscular gluteal injections every 3 months. The implants on the other hand are silicon rubber rods or capsules filled with levonorgestrel, a form of progesterone . These are implanted subcutaneously in the forearm or upper arm and constantly release small amounts of the hormone. This form of contraception lasts up to 5 years.
