  1. Our body also has some built-in defense mechanisms to protect us from those invading pathogens, that is, the immune system.
  2. Immune system of our body can be categorized into two types-innate and acquired.
  3. Innate immunity can further be categorized as the first and second line of defense.
  4. If the pathogens overcome the first line of defense and enter the body, the second line of defense comes into play.
  5. The second line of defense includes phagocytes, inflammation, fever, anti-microbial proteins, lymphatic system, etc.
  6. Inflammation occurs when a foreign object like a pathogen invades a particular area of our body, resulting in redness and swelling of that area.

Hence, inflammation is the response of the immune system against foreign objects entering our body.
