Question 19
Fill in the blanks of the paragraph given below with the words provided in the box.
A word can be used more than once.
Leaves have a green pigment called (a) __ which captures (b) __ from sunlight. This (c) __ is used in the process of (d) __ and along with other raw materials like (e) __ and (f) __ to synthesize (g) __.
(a) chlorophyll
(b) energy
(c) energy
(d) photosynthesis
(e) carbon dioxide
(f) water
(g) food
Plants prepare food themselves through the process known as photosynthesis. Hence, they are called autotrophs. Leaves are the food factories of plants. The synthesis of food in plants occurs in their leaves. Therefore, all the raw materials such as water, carbon dioxide and sunlight must reach there. Water and minerals are transported to the leaves by the vessels which run like pipes throughout the root, the stem, the branches and the leaves. The leaves have a green pigment called chlorophyll which helps leaves to capture the energy from the sunlight. This energy is used to prepare food from carbon dioxide and water. This process of synthesising food by the green plants is known as photosynthesis. The equation showing the process of photosynthesis is as follows:
Carbon dioxide + Water Sunlight,Chlorophyll−−−−−−−−−−−−−→ Carbohydrate (Starch) + Oxygen
