Fill in the blanks.
The oxidation number of manganese in KMnO4 is ....................

Open in App
Solution

The oxidation state of potassium is K+ so it is 1.

Let's consider the oxidation state of Mn is x.

The oxidation state of each oxygen molecule is 2 thus making it four.The number of oxygen atoms in KMnO4 are 4 so (4×2=8).

Since the sum of oxidation states should be neutral. So the equation should be as follows.

1+X+8=0

X=7.

So the oxidation state of Mn in KMnO4 is 7.
