(c) During electrolysis, positive ions move towards ___________.

Open in App
Solution

Electrolysis

  • It is a process that leads to the chemical changes when an electric current is passed through an electrolyte.
  • This process works with direct current only.

Example: During electrolysis of Sodium chloride NaCl.

Atanode:Cl--e-Cl

Atcathode:Na++e-Na

Cathode

  • The cathode is the negative electrode through which the electrons enter the electrolyte.
  • The cations are discharged at the cathode in the form of neutral atoms.
  • Reduction takes place at the cathode.

Anode

  • The anode is the positive electrode through which the electrons leave the electrolyte.
  • The anions are discharged at the anode.
  • Oxidation takes place at anode.

Hence, during electrolysis, positive ions move towards the cathode.
