Question

Fill in the blanks with the choices given in brackets.
(i) Metals are good _____________ (oxidizing agents / reducing agents) because they are electron ___________ (acceptors /donors).
(ii) Electrovalent compounds have ___________ (high / low) melting points.
(iii) Higher the pH value of a solution, the more __________ (acidic / alkaline) it is.
(iv) __________ (AgCl / PbCl2), a white precipitate is soluble in excess NH4OH.
(v) Conversion of ethene to ethane is an example of _________ (hydration / hydrogenation).

Solution

(i) Metals have 1,2 or 3 valence electrons hence it is easy for they to donate these valence electrons and so they are electron donars. Also they are good reducing agents as they oxidize themselves by donating electrons.

(ii) Electrovalent compounds are formed when ions of different charges are attracted towards each other. So, stronger the attraction between them more energy is required to break the bonds and hence high melting points.

(iii) The pH rang below 7 is acidic and that above 7 is alkaline.

(iv) When AgNO3 reacts with HCl, white precipitate of AgCl is obtained which are soluble in excess NH4OH
AgCl+2NH4OHAg(NH3)2Cl+2H2O

(v) Hydrogenation means of addition of hydrogen.
For conversion of ethene to ethane addition of hydrogen is to be done.
