Solution

Given rational numbers are 42 and 89.

Step 1: Making the denominators equal by taking LCM :

In order to compare two rational numbers with different denominators, we have to take the LCM of the denominators of the given rational numbers and then convert them into like rational numbers.

Here LCM of 2 and 9 is 18.

Consider 42

To make a denominator 18, multiply both numerator and denominator by 9. We get,

4×92×9=3618............(1)

Consider 89

To make a denominator 18, multiply both numerator and denominator by 2. We get,

8×29×2=1618.........(2)

Step 2 : Comparing the numerator :

Since the denominator is equal in equation (1) and (2). Therefore compare the numerator,

36>16

3618>1618

Therefore, 42>89
