Formation of salts:

  1. In a neutralization reaction, acid combines with the base to give out salt as the main product and water as byproduct.
  2. Salts can be acidic or basic in nature based on the type of acid and base in the reaction.
  3. If Strong acid reacts with a weak base the salt formed will be acidic. and if Weak acid reacts with a strong base the salt formed will be basic.
  4. If Strong acid reacts with a strong base the salt solution will be neutral.

1. Ammonium Chloride(NH4Cl)

  • It is formed by the neutralization of NH4OH and HCl.
  • Since HCl is a strong acid and NH4OH is a weak base so the salt formed (NH4Cl) will be acidic.
  • HCl(aq)+NH4OH(l)→NH4Cl(aq)+H2O(l)Hydrochloricacid+Ammoniumhydroxide→AmmoniumChloride+Water

2. Copper Sulphate(CuSO4)

  • It is formed by the neutralization of Cu(OH)2 and H2SO4.
  • Since H2SO4 is a strong acid and Cu(OH)2 is a weak base so the salt formed CuSO4 will be acidic.
  • Cu(OH)2(aq)+H2SO4(aq)→CuSO4(aq)+2H2O(l)Copperhydroxide+Sulphuricacid→CopperSulphate+Water

3. Sodium Chloride(NaCl)

  • It is formed by the neutralization of NaOH and HCl.
  • Since HCl is a strong acid and NaOH is also a strong base so the salt formed NaCl will be neutral.

4. Magnesium Nitrate (Mg(NO3)2)

  • It is formed by the neutralization of Mg(OH)2 and HNO3.

5. Potassium Sulphate (K2SO4)

  • It is formed by the neutralization of KOH and H2SO4.
