Find 3 terms in G.P. whose sum and product respectively are 21 and 216

Let the three terms be ar,a,ar.

It is given that the product of the terms is 216, therefore,

ar×a×ar=216a3=216a3=63a=6.....(1)

It is also given that the sum of the terms is 21, therefore using equation 1 we have,

ar+a+ar=216r+6+6r=216r+6r=2166(1r+r)=151+r2r=156=522r2+2=5r2r25r+2=02r24rr+2=02r(r2)1(r2)=0(2r1)(r2)=0(2r1)=0,(r2)=0r=12,r=2

With a=6 and r=12, the three terms of G.P are as follows:

ar=612=6×2=12
a=6
ar=6×12=3

Thus, the terms are 12,6 and 3.

With a=6 and r=2, the three terms are:

ar=62=3
a=6
ar=6×2=12

Thus, the terms are 3,6 and 12.
