Open in App
Solution

To subtract an integer from another integer, we add the opposite of the integer that is being subtracted to the other integer.

Step 1 : Find the opposite of the integer that is being subtracted

The integer that is being subtracted is (-50).

The opposite of (-50) is 50.

Step 2: Add the opposite of the second integer to the first integer

We have to find the value of (-31+50)

The sum of a positive and a negative integer is calculated by subtracting the absolute value of the smaller integer from the greater integer and putting the sign of the number with a greater absolute value to the result.

The absolute value of -31 is 31.

The absolute value of 50 is 50.

50-31=19

Since, 50>31, the result will take the sign that 50 has in (-31+50).

The sign is positive, so, -31+50=19.

Hence, -31-(-50)=19.
