Find a single discount (as percent) equivalent to following successive discounts : (i) 20% and 12% (ii) 10%, 20% and 20% (iii) 20%, 10% and 5%
(i) Successive discount = 20% and 12%
Let M.P. = rs. 100
First discount = 20%
Second discount = 12%
∴ S.P. =M.P.(100−Discount100
= 100×(100−20)(100−12)100×100
= 100×80×88100×100=3525
∴ Total discount on Rs. 100= 100 - 3525
= 500−3525=Rs.1485
∴ Single discount = 1485%
(ii) Successive discounts 10%, 20% and 20%
Let M.P. = Rs. 100
∴ S.P. after 3 discounts
= 100(100−10)(100−20)(100−20)100×100×100
= 100×90×80×80100×100×100=57610
∴ Total discount = Rs. 100−57610
= Rs. 1000−57610=42410
∴ Single discount = 42410% = 42.4%
(iii) Successive discounts = 20%, 10%, 5%
Let M.P. = Rs. 100
\therefore S.P. after three discounts
= Rs. 100(100−20)(100−10)(100−5)100×100×100
= Rs. 100×80×90×95100×100×100=Rs.3425
∴ Total discount = 100−3425
= 500−3425=1585
∴ Single discount = 1585% = 31.6%
