Is $\frac{5}{9}$ equal to $\frac{4}{5}$?

To compare any two fractions, we compare the numerator of one with the other. If the fractions are like fractions, ie denominators are same, we compare the numerators directly. If the fractions are unlike, we first convert them into like fractions and then compare them.

Given fractions are $\frac{5}{9}$ and $\frac{4}{5}$ which are unlike fractions.

Now, LCM of $5$ and $9$ is $45$. [LCM of coprime numbers is their product.]

Therefore,

$\frac{5}{9}=\frac{5}{9}\times \frac{5}{5}=\frac{25}{45}$ and

$\frac{4}{5}=\frac{4}{5}\times \frac{9}{9}=\frac{36}{45}$

As, $\frac{36}{45}\ne \frac{25}{45}$

Therefore, $\frac{5}{9}$ is not equal to $\frac{4}{5}$. Infact, $\frac{4}{5}>\frac{5}{9}$.
