(i)The lateral or curved surface area of a closed cylindrical petrol storage tank that is 4.2 m in diameter and 4.5 m high. [Assume π=227] (ii)How much steel was actually used if 112 of the steel actually used was wasted in making the tank?

Solution
(i) Height (h) of cylindrical tank =4.5. So, radius of the circular end =4.22=2.1m
The curved surface area of tank =2πrh
=2×221×2.1×4.5m2=54.4m2
TSA of the tank =2πr(r+h)
=2×221×2.1(2.1+4.5)
=44×0.3×6.6
=87.12m2
(ii) Let amount of steel used in making the tank =x
Steel wasted =x12.
Given:- Amount of steel required − Amount of steel wasted = TSA of the tank
x−x12=87.12
12x−x12=87.12
⇒11x12=8712100
⇒x=95.04m2
∴95.04m2 steel was used in actual while making such a tank.
