Ovary secretes ova (eggs) and female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone are produced by ovaries.

The hormonal patterns during menstrual cycle, which consist of cyclic alterations in gonadotropins, estradiol, and progesterone, are controlled by hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian feedback mechanism.

The ratio of LH to FSH secretion rises as the frequency of pulsatile GnRH release increases during the late follicular phase of the normal menstrual cycle. Increased LH secretion stimulates estrogen production from the ovary which through positive feedback leads to the midcycle LH surge that causes ovulation.

Progesterone maintains the uterus lining (the thickness of the uterus wall). If the egg has not been fertilised, the corpus luteum dies and progesterone levels drop. This causes menstruation, where the uterus lining breaks down - this is known as having a period.
