It will be 'the things had been taken away' instead of 'the things were taken away'. It is to be kept in mind that when we are refer to two past events simultaneously, the former event will be introduced by the past perfect tense and the latter event will be introduced by the simple past tense. Hence, part D contains the error. There is no error in parts A, B and C. The answer cannot be E as the error is in D.
