Question

Find stress, strain and Young modulus of elasticity in the case of a wire 1.5 m long & 1mm in cross section, if it is increased by 1.55 mm in length when a weight of 10 kg is suspended from it.

Solution

Given that,

Length of the wirel=1.5m

Change in length Δl=1.55×103m

Weight = m=10kg

Now, the stress is

=FA

=mgA

=10×100.785×106

=127.3×106N/m2

Now, the strain is

=Δll

=1.55×1031.5

=1.03×103

Now, the young modulus is

Y=FAΔll

Y=127.3×1061.03×103

Y=123.5×109

Y=1.23×1011N/m2

Hence, the stress, strain and young modulus is 127.3×106N/m2,1.03×103,1.23×1011N/m2
