Find sum of the following surds:
$(\sqrt{x} + 2 \sqrt{y}), (2 \sqrt{x} - 3 \sqrt{y}), (3 \sqrt{x} + \sqrt{y})$ .

Solution

The sum of the given surds can be determined as follows:
$(\sqrt{x} + 2 \sqrt{y}) + (2 \sqrt{x} - 3 \sqrt{y}) + (3 \sqrt{x} + \sqrt{y}) = (\sqrt{x} + 2 \sqrt{x} + 3 \sqrt{x}) + (2 \sqrt{y} + \sqrt{y} - 3 \sqrt{y})$
$= \sqrt{x} (1 + 2 + 3) + \sqrt{y} (2 + 1 - 3) = 6 \sqrt{x} + 0 \sqrt{y} = 6 \sqrt{x}$

Hence, $(\sqrt{x} + 2 \sqrt{y}) + (2 \sqrt{x} - 3 \sqrt{y}) + (3 \sqrt{x} + \sqrt{y}) = 6 \sqrt{x}$ .
