Length of rectangle = AB = CD = 12 m

Area of the pathway ABCD $=12m\times 1.5m=18m^2$

Area (PQRS) $=1.5m\times 1.5m=2.25m^2$ (This area is taken twice)

Total area of pathway = Area (ABCD) + Area (EFGH) - Area (PQRS)
