The area of the figure can be calculated in three steps:

i) Find the area of the small rectangle.

ii) Find the area of the large rectangle.

iii) Find the area of the triangle

i) Area of the small rectangle:
= length $\times$ breadth
= 5 $\times$ 6
= 30 inches${}^2$

ii) Area of the large rectangle:
= 12 $\times$ 4
= 48 inches${}^2$

iii) Area of the triangle:
= $\frac{1}{2}\times$ (height $\times$ base)
= $\frac{1}{2}\times$ 4 $\times$ 3 = 6 inches${}^2$

Area of the shape = Area of the small rectangle + Area of the large rectangle + Area of the triangle
= (30 + 48 + 6) inches${}^2$= 84 inches${}^2$
