Area of shaded portion = Area of square - area of circle - 4$\times$area of 1 quadrant

= $(4\times 4)-\frac{22}{7}\times 1\times 1-4\times \frac{{90}^0}{{360}^0}\times \frac{22}{7}\times 1\times 1$

= $16-\frac{44}{7}=\frac{112-44}{7}=\frac{68}{7}=9.71{\text{cm}}^2$
