Question

Find the coordinates of the foci, the vertices, the length of major axis, the minor axis, the eccentricity, and the latus rectum of the ellipse x225+y29=1.

Open in App
Solution

Given: Equation of ellipse x225+y29=1
Here, 25>9

So, the major axis is along the xaxis, while the minor axis is along the yaxis.

On comparing the given equation with x2a2+y2b2=1 (general form), we get

a2=25a=5
and b2=9b=3

Now, c=(a2b2)
c=(259)=16
c=4

a=5,b=3 and c=4

Major axis is along xaxis, while the minor axis is along yaxis.

Then,The coordinates of the foci =(±c, 0)
=(±4, 0)

Coordinates of the vertices =(±a, 0)
=(±5, 0)

Length of major axis =2a=2(5)=10
Length of minor axis =2b=2(3)=6

Eccentricity, e=ca=45=0.8

Length of Latus Rectum =2b2a=2×95=3.6
